Consciousness and Relationship

The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him.             John 1: 9-11

My credo has been, life is about consciousness and relationship. Therefore, the consciousness that you show up in dictates how the relationship unfolds. An example would be a person gets bad news before they go to work, and this affects their consciousness for the rest of the day. One always has choice in how much power they give the bad news and one can choose to begin again and have a better day.

I have always used the credo regarding humans and pets, and it didn’t occur to me until recently that it could include ‘things.’ For example, darkness was mentioned in this first week of Advent talk that Rev Pat Bessey gave. What is my relationship with darkness? What kind of consciousness do I have about it? I really had never thought about it before. I wasn’t afraid of the dark growing up and maybe it’s partly because my sister and I shared a room and slept in bunk beds. I was in the top bunk of course. We also had our flashlights and our pet cat that would sometimes sleep with us.

Light is a subject that seems to have an uplifting quality to it. Sunlight is always good therapy for someone who is depressed or sad. Generally, a topic people are more interested in talking about. The above quote from John chapter one is referring to Jesus’s birth. Historically this was a dark time for the inhabitants of Bethlehem and the surrounding towns because the Romans were occupying the area. This was like the Russian forces occupying Ukraine today. It makes perfect sense why so many people came to the birth in Bethlehem because it was a sign of hope and so much more.

Here is a perspective on looking at the darkness:

“Just like the seed that starts its life in the darkness of the soil, or the child that starts its life in the darkness of the womb, all beginnings are in the dark, because darkness is one of the most essential things for anything to begin.” p 138, OSHO, A Practical Guide to OSHO Meditations

For me, this gives darkness a better reputation. The book of meditations looks interesting, and you can preview it on google. It goes on to talk more about darkness. There are many other quotes on darkness or the dark, that I looked up and it has been helpful in reflecting on what I think about darkness.

And…I am still looking at what my relationship with darkness is. An activity we were given from Rev Pat was to set a timer for 3 minutes and write about what darkness is to you.

All the best,

Self-Care Nurtures

Nurturing oneself is self-care and self-care is nurturing. This is a good time of year to keep it in mind with the holidays coming. Self-care is a practice that is good any day and anytime. Ideally, a person wouldn’t want to wait until they feel depleted. In my case, I learned about it before I needed to put it into practice. Becoming a Unity Minister, it was part of the curriculum along with cultivating a prayer life which included spending time centering in daily meditation. Unity’s cofounder, Charles Fillmore would spend hours every day in meditation. He was affectionately called ‘Papa Charlie’ and was always smiling and going on spur of the moment picnics.

Selfcare isn’t age or gender specific nor is it only certain occupations. Many of you reading this may have heard about practicing self-care sooner than in your late 30’s like I did. I am sure I could have used it sooner. All genders are affected from male and female to transgender. Taking time to nurture yourself is important.

If you enjoy having pets like dogs or cats, spending time with them usually makes one smile and petting them increases the hormone Oxytocin that makes you happy and them also. This also reduces stress and anxiety. Also, meditation helps with your breathing and ability to relax more easily. A study was recently published in JAMA Psychiatry on the reduction of anxiety using meditation vs taking a daily dose of 10-20 mg of Lexapro. The results showed that they both reduced anxiety by 20%, NPR article here: https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2022/11/09/1135211525/anxiety-medication-meditation-lexapro

One can take a mental health day and go to a favorite place outside or stay home and not have to go anywhere which includes having fun. Parents and especially women may feel guilty or that it is being selfish to take time out to relax and reenergize oneself.

A few years ago, I did a study on doctors and how they practiced self-care as part of a research project during my chaplain training. I had read in the research literature that they had the highest number of suicides. This was concerning to me, and I asked the 10 I interviewed that question. The average age was 45 and they had learned to take time for traveling, recreational activities with family, reading fiction, and some journaled and danced.

Dr Saundra Dalton-Smith is a mom, medical doctor and researcher who helps “the overstressed deal with their work-rest imbalance and find actionable answers to the thriving lifestyle they desire.”

From her website: https://ichoosemybestlife.com/resources/

She emphasizes rest and what that means. There is even a quiz you can take to assess yourself.  She also says that you can do short daily activities as part of your routine for self-care.

So have it be something fun and relaxing to keep yourself energetically charged for the day.

Quantum Physics, Vibration and Attraction

“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibration.” Nikola Tesla

How Quantum Physics explains the movement of energy and its vibration to attract things and jobs, relationships and more into our lives.

In case you weren’t aware of this, everything is energy. People, plants, rocks, furniture, cars, etc. Water’s energy has been used to propel mill wheels for cider as far back as 1863 and driving other machines earlier than that. The energy in everything is vibrating at different rates.

People can come across as calm and peaceful, anxious and all points in between. Also, dogs can be very sensitive to a person’s energy. It can cause them to be excited, or back away and sometimes growl or bark. A cat might feel an attraction to your energy and approach you when normally they stay aloof from a new person that enters their home.

Quantum Physics studies matter and energy in their most basic forms. A quantum is super tiny. For example, a quantum of light would be a photon. A quantum of electricity would be an electron. Also, Quantum Physics “is a new form of mysticism, which suggests the interconnectedness of all things and beings and the connection of our minds with a cosmic mind.” Ponte and Schafer, Carl Gustav Jung, Quantum Physics and the Spiritual Mind: A Mystical Vision of the Twenty-First Century, National Center for Biotechnology Information

Quantum Physics focuses on Quantum Mechanics which is set of principals used to explain the behavior of the particles that make up matter and energy. For example, Einstein wrote in a paper that light didn’t travel as a wave, but more in the shape of a packet of energy, several quantum forms, known as quanta. It has been discovered that all particles can travel as a wave or simply as particles.

Why include this to explain attraction? It is physical proof that all things are interconnected and in various relationships in the universe, from what is visible to what is going on beyond the naked eye. Spiritually, many of us have experienced this without the physical proof, scientifically. Our focused thought on something causes energy to condense and become matter.

“The ability to manipulate the environment thoughtfully provides the capacity to shift our vantage point, to hover above the timeline and contemplate what was and imagine what will be.”
― Brian Greene, Until the End of Time: Mind, Matter, and Our Search for Meaning in an Evolving Universe

One last important term to know is Quantum Field. Each of us is surrounded by a quantum field that can expand according to our thoughts and emotions. “Jesus of Nazareth, among other spiritual teachers, was a creative partner with universal energies; he was a quantum field worker. He understood the principles of quantum physics and used them for the good of humankind without ever having attended a class on quantum principles.” P.84, Boehm, Toni G., The Power of be!

Remember when Jesus turned the water into wine? The molecules of water were changed to molecules of wine. The same thing happened with the loaves and fishes in the Sermon on the Mount story. Also consider the story of Lazarus being healed, brought back to life from the tomb. This is scientific proof for those who need evidence.

Consider this the cliff notes spiritual version of behind the scenes, on how things can be manifested through the Law of Attraction.

Thanks in Advance

Gratitude is considered a spiritual practice along with forgiveness and prayer. When we practice it, we are happier and more positive and much more. In Unity, Jesus is considered our way shower and a brother as opposed to a God that we worship. We worship God as the one power and one presence in our lives.  Jesus, in the New Testament, Jesus was always giving thanks.

He would give thanks in advance before he performed a miracle. Always teaching by example, he gave thanks out loud to God in public. Rev Felicia Searcy writes in her book, Do Greater Things,” Giving thanks in advance primes us to receive what we desire, a desire that is already fulfilled in the invisible realm. It enables us to cultivate enough belief to make the seemingly impossible possible.”

Felicia says that Jesus “saw gratitude not as the effect, but as the cause.” In the well-known story of Jesus feeding the five thousand, he blesses the fish and the bread that only filled a small basket. He could see beyond the appearance of five fish and two loaves of bread that there was much more supply than that. He asked believing in the all sufficiency of God, giving thanks for what he had and then collected what was provided in abundance that fed 5000 people.

Felicia writes, “Blessing something with the power to confer goodness is another way of saying ‘thank you’ in advance. … As Jesus showed us, in order for our thanks to be effective, we must ask from a state of trust or belief that our requests will be fulfilled.”

Gregg Braden, who wrote the book, The Isaiah Effect, talks about how events can be altered in time using quantum physics. The moments in time are called choice points. “A choice point is like a bridge making it possible to begin one path and change course to experience the outcome of a new path…. we can alter a path and an outcome by changing our belief about a situation.”

I may have mentioned this before in that it all begins with our thoughts which of course form what we believe. Charles Fillmore, Unity’s co-founder, called his thoughts, thought people. He believed they had intelligence and life. By praising these thought people, it would get carried to all parts of our body and reflect into the world through our aura.

Like Jesus, through thanksgiving we can raise our thoughts, thought people, to the level of consciousness where things become manifested.

Giving thanks in advance, trusting and believing it can be so, knowing God, the source of all substance and supply will provide it.

And so it is,

Synchronicity or Coincidence

Synchronicity or coincidence and do they both exist in a metaphysician’s world? If you consider yourself a Unity Truth student or a student of spiritual truths, then you are a metaphysician. Unity has five principles (https://unitygreaterportland.org/unitys-5-basic-principles/ ) that gives one opportunities to practice metaphysics in their daily life.

““Synchronicity” is a term coined by Carl Jung to describe a meaningful coincidence – the occurrence of two events related in some way without any demonstrable causality. It can be that one of the events is an “inner” event in the mind of an individual, such as a dream, that later is played out in the “outer,” physical world. An example might be when the object of the dream, a long-lost friend, unexpectedly comes for a visit. In another instance, the synchronistic events may be two “outer” events such as when two intellectual pioneers begin to teach the same subject at roughly the same time without knowing of the work of the other.” Russell D. Highland, Jr, 2007,“Inner Vision and Synchronicity: Dream Work as taught by Charles Fillmore and Carl Jung”, Truth Unity website

I like how Russell relates the two words. Coincidently or it happened at the same time.  Carl Jung and Charles Fillmore were both doing dreamwork at the same time and didn’t know of each other’s existence. As Russell writes in his 2007 thesis on the two of them, there were many synchronicities between them.

Before I discovered Unity at 27, I loved reading philosophy. I believed that there were coincidences. Awareness of them is a good way to start noticing and “not brush them off” as Rev Pat Bessey mentioned in her 10/23/22 Sunday lesson. There are random events, and these can get ignored, when in fact they may be specifically designed by Spirit or God or higher self (whatever your term is for higher power) to get your attention.

I had started noticing them before and after I came to Unity, a thought was proposed to me that there are no coincidences. So, I started reflecting on that from time to time. Metaphysically, always looking beyond the appearance or what is going on in each situation, more than we know is occurring. What could they really be? Synchronicities. If we apply metaphysics, looking beyond the meaning of coincidence, that is what we get.

One doesn’t have to always know or understand why synchronicities occur. It can sometimes seem like a miracle, too. In the past, Rev Pat has spoken of synchronicities being everyday miracles. Divine timing or divine order is also referenced when inconceivable alignments occur.

Your choice, what feels right for you, is it a synchronicity or a coincidence or both?

Keep a little notebook with you for when you notice a coincidence and you may find it to be deeper and qualify as a synchronicity. Using the ‘what you focus on you get more of’ idea. I think it’s fun to discover them.

Unexpected Income

This week unexpected income was part of the Sunday message. What is unexpected income, why is it important and how do you manifest it? Who is the source of your income and who provides the answers to your questions or cocreates your life with you? How do you refer to them or it?

Unexpected income is when you receive income that is separate from your paycheck. It could be a gift, a free lunch, finding money, collecting from a debt you forgot about, over payment on a bill, gifted a part of lottery winnings, etc. This is important to pay attention to or be aware of because you can create more of it. More on this will be discussed later.

Who is the source of your income and all other forms of prosperity in your life, even your paycheck? People have many names for God. Mike Dooley uses ‘Universe’ in his book, “Notes from the Universe”. Others talk to their angel, whoever they believe guides them. I have heard: Source, Guides, Higher Power or Self, Joe. I like using the universe when working with individuals who may not identify with a specific power greater than themselves, yet they believe there is one.

Specifically, it is the source that you have a relationship with. I learned early on when I began my path in Unity that cultivating a relationship with God was important. I felt connected to the Holy Spirit and a mentor said to say good morning and good night to it and eventually I would get a response. I did. I put God first, then my family. This creates the foundation for manifesting your goals in your life and a Presence that guides you in all ways.

Now, with your source that is with you 24/7 you are ready to learn the process of unexpected income. I find for myself it can start occurring when I am not worrying about my finances. It can be like putting your foot on a hose which stops the flow of water aka money flow when I allow the thought of not enough to hang around in my brain.

The initial thing to do is open an account at the bank to put the unexpected income into. I name it that and I like teaching the teller about it because they always like the idea. The universe abhors a vacuum, as Catherine Ponder, a prosperity teacher writes about. So, one is creating a vacuum for the universe to fill.

“I’m expecting unexpected income” is what you can repeat to open your mind to receive, which is asking the universe. Being specific with details about what you are using it for lets it know how ready you are. Act and say the affirmation with confidence believing it has already occurred. We can also give thanks in advance.

Then let it go, focusing on other things and not be worried or trying to make it happen. We don’t need to know how the universe is going to manifest it. When it comes to be, we collect it, open to our good. There is always enough and more for everyone. Once it is received, we say, “Thank you!”

In the book, “Go to ELF! Connecting with the Eternal Life Force”, author Lauren McLaughlin calls this a simple ABC process.

A Ask

B Believe

C Collect

I am used to the word receive as the third step. Using the word collect is more of a confirming action step.

Practice, practice, practice, and the affirmation may come to your lips without realizing and keep you in the flow.

It is a Prayer

Life itself is a prayer. Why do I believe that? Unity minister, Eric Butterworth, was one of my mentors in Unity who wrote in one of his books that he dedicated himself to a life of prayer. “I dedicate myself to living a life of prayer.” There is a little more to it and when I find the actual copy, I will tell you where I found the quote. I kept it in my wallet for years and it got quite tattered, so I took it out. I have also shared it in prayer classes, making copies.

Why would this be so important to keep with me? I had made the decision to put God first in my life. This would prompt me to do that. I had learned this from Unity’s cofounder, Charles Fillmore. There was a gradual transformation that began to take place in my life. I had begun meditating every morning and began tuning in for signs from God during the day. I had a landscaping business I had started just before I discovered Unity and was outside all the time in nature.

When living a life of prayer then everything I think, say, and do is a prayer. It is a prayer even if one isn’t dedicating a life to it. One of my classmates in ministerial school would say, swearing isn’t a prayer. I would say, yes, that is what you are affirming or putting out there to the Universe! What do you want for your life? I would ask him. It involves taking charge of one’s thoughts. This practice changed my life, one word at a time, one sentence at a time to one thought, to the outer manifestation of that thought.

Some of you may find the above paragraphs familiar if you have been following my articles that also show up in the Unity Center for Spiritual Growth newsletter. It is worth repeating because it has been the foundation of my life in Unity. Gradually through studying the teachings of Unity and Eric Butterworth, that the Christ presence was inside me as my GPS.

In the book, Go to Elf! by Lauren McLaughlin, the character Tony in the story asks his friend Molly if she believes in something inside of her that guides her. She calls this presence fairies that she talks to. She said that when she recently asked them a question, she didn’t hear from them. Tony said that she might want to try rephrasing the question. Also, he tells her to listen to her feelings.

Eric Butterworth, writes in Practical Metaphysics: A New Insight in Truth,“You can become what you really desire because your divine potential or, as Paul would call it, the Christ, is within you always. Not some of the time, not if you take a class and acquire more knowledge. Human potential studies don’t put potentiality in anyone, but they help you to understand the potential that is always present. You can become what you really desire to be, not because of some divine intervention, not because of some newfangled metaphysical system you’re going to learn, not because someone puts his hands upon you and works some spiritual magic. You can do this because your divine potential, the Christ of you, is always present within you as the Allness of the infinite process expressing as you. This is an important principle by which you can deal with life.”

In living a life of prayer, the Christ presence inside you is guiding you 24/7. When you spend time listening to your feelings and in focused prayer and meditation, it makes it much easier to achieve your dreams and goals. Meditating helps you still your thoughts and listen to guidance. I find myself telling people who are feeling helpless and powerless that they always have choice even if it doesn’t seem that way on the outside, that it begins with our thoughts. If I don’t like what I am feeling and how it is affecting me physically, what have I been thinking and giving the power to? When I realize that I haven’t been following my inner GPS, God’s Positioning System, and giving the power to something else, I can make the course correction.

What is it that you have been ‘praying’ in your life and how are you feeling about it?  Let me know if you choose to do this, or have been, what insights you have discovered and leave a comment here on the blog. Rev Airin

Death Changes Your Form

“Our eternal spiritual self is more real than anything we perceive in this physical realm, and has a divine connection to the infinite love of the Creator.”
— Eben Alexander (Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon’s Journey into the Afterlife)

This article is inspired by the book, Go to Elf! Connecting With the Eternal Life Force, by Lauren McLaughlin and the Sunday talk that Rev Pat Bessey gave.

If Unity’s cofounder, Charles Fillmore, was here now he would be applauding Eben, the neurosurgeon in the quote above. Charles believed that humankind could grow their spiritual consciousness to the level that they will be transformed by their thoughts attaining the Christ consciousness and therefore the Christ body, transfiguring as Jesus did without dying and therefore bringing forth the perfect person. (Paraphrased from page 326, Dynamics for Living, a Topical Compilation of Essential Fillmore Teachings)

Elf explains it this way, “There is really no such thing as death; there is only transformation from one form of life to another. Eternal Life is cyclical.” Most of us are familiar with the fact that the soul never dies. When we reincarnate it is with a new body and most of us believe we are born as a baby. One can only imagine how Charles was perceived with his regeneration of the body theory in the 1920’s. He was always keeping up with scientific discoveries of the time and thinking beyond them to what he believed was possible.

According to Charles then, regarding when Jesus was in the tomb, he was in a deep sleep. During this time, he was elevating his thoughts and purifying them which in turn was purifying his body and changed it to a level in which Mary didn’t recognize him.

From the New International Version BibleGateway.com: John 20:11-16.

11 Now Mary stood outside the tomb crying. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb 12 and saw two angels in white, seated where Jesus’ body had been, one at the head and the other at the foot.

13 They asked her, “Woman, why are you crying?”

“They have taken my Lord away,” she said, “and I don’t know where they have put him.” 14 At this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus.

15 He asked her, “Woman, why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?”

Thinking he was the gardener, she said, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have put him, and I will get him.”

16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.”

She turned toward him and cried out in Aramaic, “Rabboni!” (Which means “Teacher”).

Another way of looking at this is raising your vibration level or our energy level that we are vibrating at. Tune in to how a particular thought can affect the level that you are vibrating at. Spending time in meditation can raise your vibration level. Speaking particular affirmations or the name Jesus Christ can raise your energy level. Connecting with loving thoughts after spending time doing forgiveness work which lightens and frees one up. These are some of the ways to purify yourself.

I would say I am a work in progress. Let me know what you think about this here on my blog. Have fun with it!

Using the Name Jesus Christ

In traditional religions, Jesus is worshipped as God along with God and the Holy Spirit. The doctrine of their trinity is one God that manifests as three persons or forms: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Unity’s trinity is metaphysical: Mind, Idea, and Expression or Manifestation. Mind is God. Idea is Jesus and us or humankind as ideas in the mind of God. Expression or Manifestation is the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of God that breathes things into being and gives them form.

Unity believes in one God, in one form that exists in all of us as the spark of Divinity that we are one with, always connected to. The only separation from God is if we do it with our thoughts. This God is loving, compassionate, and always wants us to be happy. The God that I know doesn’t need to forgive us. We are the ones that need to forgive our selves and others. See releasing article on how: https://revairin.wordpress.com/2022/09/27/releasing-processes-for-selfcare/

Jesus is our brother and wayshower who said, (paraphrasing) greater things than I shall you do also. He taught that humankind has the same abilities that he had. He was a man that demonstrated and fulfilled his 100% potential becoming one with God and ascended into heaven. He left a blueprint of steps to follow in the New Testament with his teachings and healings.

The Holy Spirit is the breath and spirit of God, therefore infinite.  “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Spirit” (John 20:22). As mentioned above brings thing into Being, the breath of life.

As one moves along in their spiritual journey and life in general, challenges occur. It could be a medical health challenge, an addictive behavior, fears of our own making, overwhelmed by world events or politics…etc. In the following quote it has been proven again and again, that the power in saying the name “Jesus Christ” can give you more energy than a candy bar if you are fatigued or dispel fear when it feels futile.

“You can do everything when “Christ Jesus” is your chief word. By and by the world will not seem heavy to you. You will not be Atlas with the world on his shoulders but Jesus with the world under His feet. Your whole business in life is to “learn of Me,” or to learn how to let the Jesus Christ thought within you reign supreme. This thought that names Jesus Christ is the noblest thought within your mind. Let us keep saying “I AM Jesus Christ.” Tennyson kept repeating his own name till he felt as big as the planet. Some mystics kept repeating certain syllables, but Jesus Christ said, “Repeat My Name.” Then you will not feel as if you were the planet, but as if the world were under your feet. You will not become sense-less, like the mystics who repeat senseless syllables, by speaking My Name, but will come into your inheritance of health, wisdom, and success.” p. 192, Emma Curtis Hopkins, Twelve Studies in High Mysticism

“Emma Curtis Hopkins is essentially saying that Jesus is far more than a teacher or wayshower. She is declaring that there is actual power in declaring “the name Jesus Christ.” She acknowledges that “quite great things” may be accomplished speaking “the name Spirit” but doing so will not have the same effect on health and strength as speaking “the name Jesus Christ.” “ Mark Hicks, TruthUnity.net

The same power that surged through Jesus, surges through us. The Holy Spirit that helps us create things into being. It is the only authority that Jesus acknowledged and taught to his disciples. I have experienced it as heat in the palms of my hands when I am doing healing touch sometimes. When I surrender and let myself be the instrument of this power that is moving through me to another. One also doesn’t have to touch the person.

In using the name Jesus Christ, it doesn’t need be spoken out loud to be effective. I will create affirmations and prayers, which are really one and the same, that begin with: In the name and through the power of Jesus Christ, Get thee gone! I did this when I had poison ivy starting on my arm. I learned that it was all about how much power you allow something to have over you.

Feel free to comment on how this has worked for you. There is a place to leave them here.
